COVID-19 has changed the way people would spend their time in Ramadan. Earlier, it was a common practice to attend the Masjid, arrange for Iftars for the needy and complete your charity goals. Today, everything has come to a standstill. But this does not mean you lose out on the reward of charity. Ramadan during Covid 19 presents innovative ways of giving in charity. Here are a few!
Ramadan during Covid 19: 5 ways to be charitable
Use social media to donate groceries
Covid 19 has impaired the lower middle class and the daily wagers economically. Add to it the fact that we cannot go out and help these people in person, they are left to struggle for their daily meals. However, where there is a will, there is a way. We can use the power of social media to start helping through these challenging times. Join groups, look around and you’ll find plenty of social media initiatives to help the needy this Ramadan.
Sponsor a child online
Sahl ibn Sa’d reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Myself and the caretaker of an orphan will be in Paradise like this,” and he held his two fingers together.

So here is another way to give in charity while you stay home – sponsor an orphan child. You can sponsor a child’s educational expenses or even go beyond that and sponsor all the living expenses too. All you need to do is look up an orphanage which accepts online donations and speak to them about monthly or yearly plans. Almost all of these sponsorship programs give you periodic progress reports and other details about the child. Some of them also let you be in contact with your sponsored child.
Donate an iftar meal
It was narrated that Zayd ibn Khaalid al-Juhani said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever gives iftaar to one who is fasting will have a reward like his, without that detracting from the reward of the fasting person in the slightest.”
Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 807; Ibn Maajah, 1746
The hadith is self explanatory. Donating an iftar meal increases your reward.
Help Covid patients this Ramadan
The world is facing a pandemic. People are struggling for personal protective equipment, basic medicines and what not. Your donation could make a difference.
Build a “care package” for delivery guys
Delivery guys are selflessly working to make your life easier. Most of these people live away from their families for several months at a time and don’t have access to many things that we take for granted. Get creative and make a small care package for them – fill it with fresh toiletries, a sealed packet of dates, a bottle of water or whatever you can spare. Whenever a delivery guy comes to your door, give them this surprise gift and watch how your donation brings a smile to their face.
