The dilemma of praying at work

How many of you manage to pray at work regularly without feeling awkward? I bet only a handful (if you’re living in countries with Non-Muslim majorities). As a Muslim, it is such a burden on the conscience to miss a prayer. Your heart is almost at the prayer mat but you are held back by meetings, workplace environment and above all, the fear of being judged by your colleagues and bosses. At times, you can’t stop wondering why praying at work is so easy for some people, while for you, it is a monumental task.

The fact of the matter is that all the apprehensions you have about praying at work are in fact, limitations of your own mind. Here are a few tips to help you get set praying at work:

– Set your priorities right

We live on this planet to worship the Creator rather than please His creation. Once that is rooted in your mind, you’ll figure out how to pray even in the most awkward situations. Think it over – if you are not doing what you are supposed to do in your limited time here, how will you stand before Allah in the hereafter? How will you face Him?
Will the people who you’re skipping prayer after prayer for come to your rescue? No. Only Allah will.

– Be courageous

All it takes is a little courage to overcome your worst fears. In this case, all you have to do is to ask your office management for a 5 minute break twice or thrice a day (depending on your working hours) to pray. Once you take the first step, Allah will make the rest easy. But to be honest, taking the first step is really in your hands. Go ahead and ask!

– What if they say no?

This is when the lunch and tea breaks can come to your rescue. Nobody denies a lunch or tea break so go ahead, hop into a corner of your office or the nearest Masjid or even your parking lot and pray. You see, where there is a will, there is a way.

– Be content and grateful

Most of the people complain about not having a dedicated prayer room all by themselves or being given small places to pray in.
Brothers and sisters, you need to be content with whatever you have got. Even if the place is small, you can pray in it. Even if the time frame is short, you can.

– Don’t overthink

Most of the time, people don’t really care if you are praying or not. So they won’t judge you or hold opinions about you. So stop worrying about what people think and do your own thing. The fact that you are pleasing Allah should bring in some relief.
